Grammatical information: m., pl. also τὰ κύκλα (prop. collektiv.; Schwyzer 581, Schw.-Debrunner 37)Meaning: `circle, ring, wheel', also metaph. of circle-formed objects, e.g. `circular' place, wall round the city' (Il.).Compounds: Many compp., e.g. κυκλο-τερής `made round, round' (Il.; cf. on τείρω), εὔ-κυκλος `forming a beautiful circle' (Il.); also in hypostases, e.g. ἐγ-κύκλ-ιος `going around in a circle, general' (Att. hell.; on the meaning Koller Glotta 34, 174ff.); on Κύκλ-ωψ s. v.Derivatives: A. Substant.: 1. diminutiva κυκλ-ίσκος (medic., Ptol.), - ίσκιον (Dsc.). 2. - ίστρια f. `cyclic danceress' (Att. inscr.; after κιθαρίστρια a. o.). 3. κυκλά-μινος f., m. plant-name, `Cyclamen graecum, Lonicera periclymenum' (Thphr., Dsc.), also - αμίς (Orph.), after the circular root-knoll (Strömberg Pflanzennamen 36; formation after σησάμινος a. o.). 4. Κυκλειών, - ῶνος m. month-name (Keos, IVa; after the feast τὰ Κύκλ(ε)ια). 5. Κυκλεύς PN (Ael. ; Boßhardt Die Nom. auf - ευς 130). -- B. Adject. 1. κυκλάς f. `forming a circle', also Κυκλάδες pl. as GN `circle-islands' (IA.), Lat. LW [loanword] cyclas name of a circular cloth; κυκλιάς f. adjunct of τυρός (AP). - 2. κύκλ-ιος `circular' (Att.). 3. - ικός `circular, belonging to a circle' (Arist.), 4. - όεις (S. in lyr., AP), 5. - ώδης (Hp.) `id.'; 6. κυκλ-ιαῖος `turning in a circle' (Att. inscr.), 7. - ιακός, τὰ κυκλιακά title of a treatise on the circle (late); 8. κυκλατός `shod' of horses (pap. VIp). -- C. Verbs. 1. κυκλέω `turn in a circle, curround' (H 332) with κύκλησις `revolution' (Pl.). 2. κυκλόω `make circular, bend round, surround' (IA.) with - ωμα `rounding, round object, wheel etc.' (E.; cf. Chantraine Formation 184), - ωσις `surrounding' (Th., X.). 3. κυκλεύω `surround, go in a circle', e.g. a water-wheel, `irrigate' (Hp., Str., pap.) with κύκλ-ευμα `water-wheel', - ευτήριον `id.', - ευτής `watcher of a water-wheel' (pap. 4. κυκλίζω `turn around' (Agatharch.) with - ισμός (Arist.-comm.). 5. κυκλάζει κύκλῳ περιέρχεται. 6. κυκλαίνει στρογγυλοῖ H.Etymology: Old name of the wheel, preserved in ceveral languages: Skt. cakrá- m. n., Av. čaxra- m., Germ., e.g. OE hwēol n. ( hweowol, hweogol) \> NEngl. wheel, IE * kʷe-kʷl-o- (with intensive reduplication); besides with u-coloured weakening of the reduplicating vowel (because of the labiovelar, Schwyzer 296 a. 423) κύκλος and Toch. A kukāl (B kokale) `wagon'; further the in detail unclear Phryg. κίκλην την ἄρκτον τὸ ἄστρον H., prop. `wagon' (cf. Porzig Gliederung 183; not better Scherer Gestirnnamen 139). An also very old, unreduplicated and full grade formation is represented by OWNo. huĕl (beside hjōl = OE. hwēol), OPr. kelan, IE. *kʷélo-m n. (as ἔργον); with ο-vowel (from the collektive plural kola?; Lidén GHÅ 39: 2, 47 n. 1) OCS kolo, gen. - ese `wheel, wagon'. - At the basis is the verb `turn', s. πέλομαι. Given the further general meaning `wheel' (\> `wagon') one may ask whether κύκλος in the meaning `circle' as apposed to `wheel' is not secondary. An original meaning `turning, turner' is supposed in the Baltic word for `neck; Gm. Hals', e.g. Lith. kãklas (s. Fraenkel Wb. s. v.); but the word is not only semantically, but also formally deviant (IE. * kʷo-kʷl-o- ?) from the wheel-meaning.Page in Frisk: 2,44-45Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κύκλος

17 στέφω
στέφω, - ομαιGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `to surround closely, to enclose tightly, to encase, to wreathe, to honour (with libations)' (for it, esp in prose, often στεφανόω).Other forms: Aor. στέψαι, - ασθαι (Il.), pass. στεφθῆναι, fut. στέψω, - ομαι, perf. ἔστεμμαι (IA.; ἐστεθμένος Miletos VIa; cf. στέθματα below).Compounds: Also w. περι-, ἐπι-, κατα- a.o. As 2. member a.o. in χρυσο-στεφής `consisting of a golden garland' (S.), but most verbal, e.g. καταστεφ-ής `wreathed' (: κατα-στέφω, S., A. Oh. 95); 2. στέμμα, most pl. - ατα n. `band, wreath' (Il.), also as ornament of Rom. figures or ancestors, `family tree' (Plu., Sen., Plin.), `guild' (late inscr.) with - ματίας surn. of Apollon (Paus.), - ματιαῖον meaning uncertain (H., AB), - ματόω `to wreathe' (E.); on the byform στέθματα τὰ στέμματα H. s. Schwyzer 317 Zus. 1 (w. lit.). 3. στέψις f. `the wreathing' (pap. IIIp). 4. στεπτικόν n. `wreath-money, -toll' (pap. IIIp). 5. στεπτήρια στέμματα, α οἱ ἱέται ἐκ τῶν κλάδων ἐξῆπτον H.; Στεπτήριον n. name of a Delphic feast (Plu.). 6. στεφών m. `summit' (Ephesos IIIa), = ὑψηλός, ἀπόκρημνος H.; after κολοφών a.o. -- 7. στεφάνη f. `fillet, edge of a helmet' also `helmet' (Trümpy Fachausdrücke 43. also Hainsworth JHSt. 78, 52), `edge of a rock, wall-pinnacle' (esp. ep. poet. Il., also hell. a. late prose). 8. στέφανος m. `wreath, frame, wreath of victory or honour, honour' (since Ν 736) with several derivv.: - ιον, - ίσκος, - ίς, - ικός, - ιαῖος. - ίτης, - ιτικός, - ίζω, - ίξαι; esp. - όομαι, - όω, also w. περι- a.o., `to form a wreath, to wreathe, to crown, to decorate, to honour' (Il.), from where - ωμα, - ωματικός, - ωσις, - ωτής. - ωτίς and - ωτρίς (Fraenkel Nom. ag. 1, 164), - ωτικός.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: As the basic meaning of στέφω, from which all other formations ar serived, clearly is `closely, fest surrounded, enclosed', there is no reason not to connect, Skt. stabhnā́ti, perf. tastámbha `make fest, hold fest, support, stiffen, stem', as already appears from πύκα `close, fest', πυκάζω `make fest, enclose narrowly', ἄμ-πυξ (and Av. pusā) `band of the forehead, diadem' [but see s.v.]. Of the many further representatives of this great and difficult to limit wordgroup may only still be mentioned Skt. stambha- m. `making fest, stem, support, post, pillar', Lith. stam̃bas `stump, stalk of a plant', Latv. stabs `pillar', Germ. e.g. OHG stabēn `be fixed, stiff' (Eastfris. staf `stiff, lame'), OWNo. stefja `stem', OHG stab, OWNo. stafr `staff'; IE * stebh-, stembh- (WP. 2, 623ff., Pok. 1011 ff.). -- As Skt. stambha- can also mean `bumptiousness, pretentious being', the question has arisen, whether also στόμφος `bombastic, highflown speech' belongs here; cf. on στέμβω. With stabhnā́ti etc. are often connected στέμβω [wrongly, s.v.], ἀστεμφής etc. assuming a meaning complex `press, stamp, stem, support, post etc.' (s. WP. and Pok. l. c.), a combination, which goes beyond what can be proven. -- Diff. on στέφω, στέφανος Lidén Streitberg-Festgabe 224ff.: to NPers. tāǰ `corona, diadema regium', Arm. t`ag `id.', ev. also to Osset. multiplicative suffix - daɣ (W. Oss. dudaɣ) with a basic meaning `wind, wrap, fold'; would be IE *( s)tegʷʰ-. == Frisk's discussion is completely dated. It is hampered by Pok. 1011, where (* stebh-. * stembh- and * step- are conbined; this is impossible in IE, so the grouping can best be completely dismissed (presence beside absence of a nasal is impossible, as is bh\/b\/p.) Skt. stabhná̄ti has a root * stembhH-\/*stm̥bhH-, which cannot give Gr. στεφ-, not στεμβ-. It might be found in ἀστεμφής. = σταφυλή and στέμφυλον are a Pre-Greek group and have nothing to do with IE. = The argumentation around ἄμπυξ (s.v.) can better be abandoned. = For στέφω one expects *stebh- (without nasal), but no such root has been found; the Geranic words for `staff (Stab)' have a quite diff. meaning. = So στέφω has no etym.Page in Frisk: 2,794-795Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στέφω

Nom. actionis: 1. πλάσμα n. `forming, formation, fiction' (IA.) with - ματίας m. `fictional', - ματώδης `id.' (Arist.), - ματικός `id.' (S.E.); ἔμ-, ἐπί-, κατά-πλασμα n. `plaster' (medic.). 2. πλάσις ( ἀνά-πλάσσω, κατά-πλάσσω etc.) f. `forming, formation, figuration' (Hp., Arist.). 3. ἀνα-πλασμός m. `figuration' (Plu.), μετα-πλασ-μός m. `transformation' (gramm.) a.o. 4. κατα-πλαστύς f. `besmearing' (Hdt. 4, 175). (pap.). 8. πλαστικός ( προσ-, ἐν-, ἀνα-) `suitable for forming, plastic' (Pl.). -- a.o.; κορο-πλάστης hell.). On πλάθανον s.v.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Common verbal stem πλαθ-; from there on the one hand the yot-present *πλαθ-ι̯ω \> πλάσσω (on the phonetics Schwyzer 320), on the other hand the non-present forms (which on themselves could also go back on πλα- with analog. πλάσσαι, πλασθῆναι, πλαστός; cf. on κλάω). -- No correspondence outside Greek. As the θ (IE *dh) prob. orig. has present-forming, in any case formantic function ( πλή-θω, βρί-θω etc.; Schwyzer 703), πλά-θω can belong to the group of pelā- `broaden' (s. πλάξ); one has to assume an orig. meaning `smear thin, make flat'; s. WP. 2, 63. On the meaning `smear' (in κατα-, ἐμ-πλάσσω) and `knead, form' cf. the same duplicity in Skt. déhmi `spread, smear' and Lat. fingō `knead, form' (cf. on τεῖχος). -- From ἔμπλαστρον Lat. emplastrum, Fr. emplâtre etc.; MLat. plastrum ` Pflaster, plaster', Fr. plâtre, OHG pflastar etc. -- Cf. πλάξ; cf. also παλάθη and πλάστιγξ. -- A form πλαθ- annot be derived from IE, cf. on πλάθανον. So it must be of Pre-Greek origin.Page in Frisk: 2,551-552Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πλάσσω
